Berkley, a sylvan enclave, in Upper NW Washington.
Tell someone you live in the Washington neighborhood known as Berkley
and odds are that they -- even if they are long-time residents of the
nation's capital -- very likely will have no idea where you live.
But as you describe exactly where Berkley is
located, the reaction you're likely to encounter is: "Oooo, so
that's what that neighborhod is called."
Here elegant, gracious homes from a bygone era mix with more recent
custom built homes.
Often Berkley is confused with Wesley Heights,
another posh neighborhood adjacent to Berkley's northern boundary. The
confusion is understandable as both areas lay claim to multi-million-dollar
homes sited on lushly landscaped settings.
Berkley is located just north of the more well-known
Foxhall neighborhood and southeast of the much-coveted Palisades
enclave.
It is surrounded by parkland, nestled between Battery Kemble Park, Wesley Heights Park and Glover Park.
Berkley's general boundaries include Edmunds Street
(and Wesley Heights Park) to the north, Reservoir Road to the south, MacArthur Boulevard
(and Battery Kemble Park) to the west and Glover Park to the
east.
But Berkley also includes a pocket of homes
south of Reservoir Road sandwiched between Foxhall Road and MacArthur
Blvd. This area of Berkley is often mistaken for Foxhall
or even Palisades. Here one can find less
expensive semi-detached homes, as well as a townhouse-style condominium
known as "The Strand," which overlooks the Georgetown
Reservoir.
While Colonials seem to dominate Berkley, Victorians,
impressive Contemporaries, and even a few Cape Cods dot the landscape
too.
At the neighborhood's southern end are the German
Embassy; Mount Vernon
College, a 23-acre women's college that in recent years was
taken over by George Washington University; and a small development known as Colony
Hill.
Located east of Foxhall Road and north of
Reservoir Road, Colony Hill was constructed in the 1930s by architects
Boss & Phelps, the original architects of Foxhall
Village. The 43 detached houses that comprise the three-street
development are modest
Colonial and Georgian-style homes.
A more recent development known as Foxhall
Crescents (named after the street on which it is located) touts homes
with Beaux Arts-inspired exteriors that have a European flair all their
own. Located to the west of Foxhall Road, these properties were built in
the early-to-mid1980s.
Berkley also is home to the Kreeger
Museum, which showcases a formidable collection of modern art, as
well as several
private schools. Among these are The Lab
School of Washington, Rock Creek
International School, and the Georgetown
Day School.
Berkley soon will have a few new residents as
the Mayor's official residence is under development at 1801 Foxhall
Road. This Georgian mansion sited on 17 acres was a gift donated by
Betty Brown Casey, the widow of Montgomery County (Maryland) real estate
developer Eugene B. Casey.
Additionally, the Field
School, a private co-educational
middle and high school now located in Kalorama, is in the process of relocating to
the neighborhood. The school's new campus will be located on Foxhall Road across
the street from Mount Vernon College in the famous Morris &
Gwendolyn Cafritz estate -- once known as the finest example of Art Deco
residential construction in Washington, DC.
