Brightwood

The neighborhood known as Brightwood today is considered to be much smaller than when it was named so in 1861.
Historically, Brightwood included areas now a part of the nearby Petworth and Shepherd Park neighborhoods.
Brightwood is bounded to the north by Aspen Street, to the south by Kennedy Street, and to the west by Rock Creek Park. Historically, Brightwood's eastern boundary has been  Georgia Avenue. However, some now consider Brightwood to extend eastward far beyond Georgia Avenue.
Washington real estate mogul Harry Wardman, one of the District's most prolific residential architects who was known for his fine detailing, built several homes in Brightwood, including six on the corner of 9th and Longfellow Streets in the late 19th Century and 500 more from the 1920s until the time of his death in 1938.
Brightwood is rich with Civil War history. It was the site of a major fort constructed by the federal government to use as a training and supply center for Union troops.
Given its military connection, perhaps it's not so surprising that Brightwood is adjacent to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
The neighborhood also lays claim to being the home of several well-known Washingtonians, among them: W.C. Bergmann, founder of the local dry cleaning chain that bears his name.
The story goes that Bergmann picked up laundry in his horse-drawn truck and delivered it back to his customers freshly cleaned and pressed to supplement his income as a lamplighter in 1917.
