The Westchester cooperative, one of the largest luxury apartment houses in the nation's
capital.
Cathedral Heights is
nestled in between the neighborhoods of Glover
Park (to the south), Cleveland Park
(to the north), Wesley Heights (to the west) and Observatory
Circle (to the east).
The neighborhood is bounded to the south by
Fulton Street, to the north by the area just south of Woodley Road, to
the east by Wisconsin Avenue, and to the west by Glover Archbold Park.
When most people
think of Cathedral Heights they think of quiet streets lined with
elegant detached single family homes and distinguished rowhouses
constructed in the early 20th Century. But Cathedral Heights is also
home to several large condominiums and cooperatives, and even a few
rental buildings.
The most notable co-op in the
neighborhood is the Westchester, an old world (circa 1931), full-service
building that includes more than 550 units, making it one of the largest
luxury apartment houses in DC.
Visitors to this impressive Best Address*
(located at 4000 Cathedral Avenue) are greeted by a massive pair of 18th
Century wrought iron English gates.
The glamorous four-building complex
is centered around an elliptical sunken garden and fountain, the focal
point of the estate which spans more than a dozen acres and features some of the loveliest
landscaped grounds in all the city.
The Westchester offers its residents its own
restaurant, beauty salon, dry cleaners, convenience shop, 24-hour
front desk even it's own gasoline station!
Alban
Towers is another historic address in the neighborhood. Located at
3700 Massachusetts Avenue, this rental apartment complex (managed by
Archstone-Smith) just underwent a massive renovation/restoration
effort. Built in 1929, the Gothic Revival architecture of this building
nicely complements that of the National Cathedral, which is just up the
street. (To learn more about Alban Towers, click

building.)
