Many consider Crestwood to be one of Washington's best
kept secrets.
Nestled into Rock Creek Park, this quiet,
suburban neighborhood is filled with stately homes built at the beginning
of World War II on generously sized lots.
Crestwood is bounded to the north by Colorado Avenue,
to both the south and west by Rock Creek Park, and to the east by 16th
Street.
Indeed, the grandeur of the homes lining 16th
Street -- not to mention the wealthy homeowners those residences attracted
in the 1920s -- earned the area the nickname: "The Gold Coast."
Crestwood abounds with spacious detached Tudors
and Colonials (both the traditional Flemish red brick style, as well as
the stucco-faced Spanish Colonials).
Row houses also can be found in the neighborhood.
But unlike other parts of the city where such homes often are narrow,
Crestwood's row houses include large porch-fronted farmhouses that boast
either green or red terra cotta roofs.
No matter what the architectural style though, most all
of the homes have one thing in common: true craftsmanship. These homes
were designed with gracious entertaining in mind, as evidenced by the
floor plans and the formal dining rooms.
As Crestwood is strictly residential, with
absolutely no commercial endeavors in the neighborhood, a car is a must
here. But if you have a car, Crestwood has easy access to downtown DC or
Maryland via 16th Street, as well as Virginia via Rock Creek Park.
Sen. John D. Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) liked the area
so much that he purchased a 22-acre estate in the neighborhood nearly 20
years ago.
Rockefeller's multi-million dollar home aside...
Crestwood homes typically sell for less than comparative homes in other
upper northwest neighborhoods west of Rock Creek Park. However, in
recent years, home prices have been climbing steadily.
But there are still a few "deals" to be had
-- like the former home of the Israeli Embassy. Located at 4800 17th
Street, NW, the 6,000 square foot mansion sold in May 2001 for $600,000.
Adding to the neighborhood's charm is its
proximity to the Carter
Barron Amphitheater. Located in Rock Creek Park (near the
intersection of 16th Street and Colorado Avenue), this outdoor
Greek-style theater offers
wonderful concerts and theatrical productions throughout the summer --
including free performances of Shakespearean plays!
