 George Washington University. Foggy Bottom seems to be intrinsically linked with George Washington University (GWU). The university campus dominates the neighborhood. Indeed, the area surrounding GWU is in large part an extended campus for the university. But Foggy Bottom is so much more. Foggy Bottom is the area south of K Street, between 17th and 26th Streets. It is bounded to the south by Constitution Avenue. Located east of Georgetown and south of Dupont Circle, the area is home to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Pan American Health Organization, the State Department, the Interior Department and the National Academy of Sciences among other government institutions. There are also several hotels and restaurants in the area. Once the site of breweries, a gas works and a naval observatory, Foggy Bottom today is primarily comprised of modest condominium and cooperative mid-rise buildings constructed in the 1960s and a smattering of luxury buildings (a few of which were built in recent years). But the neighborhood also has an historic district that includes narrow brick row houses that date as far back as the 1870s. Foggy Bottom also lays claim to the Watergate complex, which to this day remains home to Washington's social and political elite. Prices for units at the Watergate can skew the average for the neighborhood dramatically. For example, while a two bedroom condo recently sold for $350,000, during the same time period a two bedroom at the Watergate commanded $1.8 million!
