Glover Park is known for its porch-front row houses. A sylvan enclave, Glover Park is a mostly residential neighborhood that was first developed around 1925. Its boundaries include Fulton Street* to the north, Whitehaven Park to the south, Wisconsin Avenue to the east, and Glover-Archbold Park to the west. Glover Park is primarily composed of porch-front row houses, most of which were built in the 1920s and 1930s. But there are also quite a few condominiums, cooperatives, and garden apartment complexes in the neighborhood. Glover Park has a great small-town feel to it, thanks in large part to its proximity to the commercial corridor on Wisconsin Avenue. With numerous restaurants (not to mention a neighborhood ice cream shop!), a few banks, a couple of grocery stores, a post office, a video store, a book store, a hair salon, a dry cleaners and a new hardware store all within walking distance, you might as well not have a car living here! Surrounded by parkland, residents of the neighborhood can take advantage of Whitehaven Park and Glover-Archbold Park, as well as nearby Guy Mason Park. Plus there is a "victory garden" located at 42nd Street and Tunlaw Road that is one of the longest continuously used plots since World War II. Glover-Archbold Park, by the way, was donated to the city in 1924 by Charles C. Glover, a former Riggs Bank executive, and Anne Archbold, heiress to Standard Oil of New Jersey. The 183 acres, which contains 150-year-old trees, were intended to be used as a bird sanctuary. Rather, it is considered a part of the Cathedral Heights neighborhood.
