Hillandale
Hillandale is a 24-hour gated community, boasting tennis courts, a swimming pool, gardens, children's play areas, and even a duck pond!
Only accessible via an entrance on 39th Street, Hillandale is nestled into scenic parkland. It is bordered to the north by Whitehaven Park and to the west by Glover-Archbold Park.
Hillandale is located across the street from Georgetown University Medical Center and adjacent to the French Embassy and Chancery.
Although technically a part of Burleith, Hillandale's homes are considerably more expensive than those of the surrounding neighborhood. The community was developed in the 1980s and 1990s.
Throughout the eight streets that comprise Hillandale one can find a variety luxury townhouses. Some are contemporary, while others present a more traditional Federal style. Some have three stories; others have four.
Hillandale also has a few detached single family homes. Many of these very large homes are located on Parkglen Court and Highwood Court -- the two blocks in the development that back onto Whitehaven Park, and thus offer sweeping tree-top vistas.
Most recently (May 2001) a detached home in Hillandale sold for $1.4 million.  (However, two years earlier another sold for more than $1.6 million.)
No matter what the style, though, nearly all Hillandale homes share a common feature: a red brick facade.
Hillandale homes tout garages, elevators and vaulted ceilings. Some even have their own wine cellars! Pets are allowed in this community, although there is a size restriction.  The development is part of a home owners' association. Fees average around $200/month.
Former White House press secretary Pierre Salinger liked the neighborhood so much that he purchased a Hillandale townhome in 1997. Three years later, he sold it for a tidy profit!
Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn), former vice presidential candidate, also calls Hillandale home, having purchased a townhouse here in 1994.
Rich with history, Hillandale was built on land that once was part of a 70-acre estate belonging to Anne Archbold, heiress to Standard Oil of New Jersey.
In the early 1920s, Archbold commissioned noted Boston architect Josephine Wright Chapman to build  "Hillandale Mansion," a 34-room Italianate villa estate at 3905 Mansion Court, NW.
Near the time of her home's construction, Archbold and Charles C. Glover, a former Riggs Bank executive, donated a nearby plot of land to the city. That land -- 183 acres! -- would come to be known as Glover-Archbold Park.
