Logan Circle

Once known as 13th Circle and later Iowa Circle, Logan Circle was so dubbed in 1930 in memory of Civil War General and Senator John A. Logan.

Easily rivaling Georgetown, Logan Circle was once home to Washington's wealthiest, and its homes were among the city's most ornate Victorians.
Following a period of neglect, today Logan Circle again is re-emerging as one of the desirable residential addresses in the city, a trendy turn-of-the-century enclave!
With its revitalization, Logan Circle -- which takes its name from the traffic circle it surrounds -- has been growing more and more popular. Not surprisingly, prices are climbing steadily here.
A major catalyst spurring Logan's growth has been the "new" Whole Foods
grocery store, which opened a couple of years ago at 1440 P Street. After several years of hard-fought negotiations, neighborhood activists lured Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods to its new site just off 14th Street near the circle.
Following Whole Foods' lead, CVS Pharmacy and other businesses have begun setting up shop on the same block. Logan Circle indeed has an eclectic group of shops, restaurants and even a theatre district.
The neighborhood's historic district is generally considered to be the eight city blocks that front the traffic circle itself. The greater Logan area, however, stretches from 16th Street to the west to 9th Street to the east, running from S Street to the north down to Massachusetts Avenue to the south.
The neighborhood is filled with absolutely stunning Victorian architecture. One particularly outstanding block is Corcoran Street between 13th and 14th Streets, where Italianate and Second Empire row houses line the street.
Every year, the neighborhood's grand historic homes open their doors to the public as part of a much-anticipated holiday house tour.
Logan is comprised primarily of Victorian row houses, but there are also quite a few condominiums and cooperatives -- most of which were also built at the turn of the 20th Century.
Two particularly notable historic buildings in Logan are The Hawarden (a co-op located at 1419 R Street, NW) and The Iowa (a condo located at 1325 13th Street, NW). Both of these buildings have the distinction of being "Best Addresses."
Local developers, such as ABDO Development, were among the first have taken note of the trendy area. Their renovations of some of the more notable Victorians in the neighborhood have transformed once dilapidated shells into high-end luxury condominiums.
Logan is also home to the Carnegie Institution of Washington (located at 16th & P Streets). The researchers associated with this 100-year old institution have been responsible for everything from the Manhattan Project (one of the major science efforts of WWII) to the discovery of extrasolar planets.
