 The Ponce de Leon is among the neighborhood's most elegant apartment houses -- not to mention an historic landmark as it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. If you've never heard of Wakefield before, you're not alone. Some mistakenly refer to this neighborhood as "Van Ness" (a reference to the nearby Metro station and surrounding commercial corridor). But Wakefield is considerably more high brow, touting many distinguished detached homes constructed between the late 1920s-1930s. Geographically shaped like a triangle, Wakefield fits snuggly between Nebraska and Connecticut Avenues and Albemarle Street.* Specifically, its boundaries include Connecticut Avenue to the east, Nebraska Avenue to the west, and Albemarle Street to the south. Wakefield's northern tip lies at the intersection of Nebraska and Connecticut Avenues. With its wide tree-lined streets and detached homes set far back from the street, Wakefield commands a very suburban feel. However, a few condominiums and a handful of historic cooperatives lining Connecticut Avenue also call Wakefield home. The most prominent among these is the Ponce de Leon (4514 Connecticut Avenue, NW), an elegant co-op built in the late 1920s that serves as a classic example of Spanish Revival architecture. Among the building's many distinctions is the fact that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Wakefield is convenient to two Metro stations (Van Ness & Tenleytown), numerous shops and restaurants and two grocery stores (Giant and Whole Foods) .It also is within walking distance to bucolic Rock Creek Park, which not only affords residents a place to play on the weekends but an easy commute to downtown DC, Maryland and Virginia via Rock Creek Parkway. *The south side of Albemarle Street is not considered to be a part of Wakefield.
