"If
you build it, they will come." So goes the saying and nothing could
better define the West End today. Once
nearly exclusively comprised of hotels and office buildings with just a
smattering of Victorian row houses (most of which had long since been
converted to condominiums), the West
End has been transformed in recent years to become home to some of the
most luxurious residential addresses in the nation's capital.
The revitalization of the neighborhood was spurred
in large part in 2000 when New York City-based developer Millennium
Partners acquired almost an entire city block to build a multi-use
development consisting of the swanky Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Residences
(the "Residences" being a luxury condominium offering hotel
amenities such as room service to residents), the posh L.A. Sports Club
and several retail shops.
When The Ritz-Carlton opened its doors, it set an all-time
high record for dollar per square foot in Washington. It was an
impressive feat that quickly drew the attention of other developers who
soon were clamoring for prime West End real estate.
Today the neighborhood boasts an array of high-end luxury
condominiums, such as the Atlas and the Columbia Residences,
formerly the Columbia Hospital for Women which having had occupied the
site since 1870 was one of the oldest hospitals in DC. And more are on
the way, such as "22 West," 95 luxury condominiums due to be
available in 2008 at 1177 22nd Street, NW.
With the influx of wealthy residents, the West End has
drawn upscale retail establishments as well. Most recently, specialty
grocery store Trader Joe's has moved into 25th Street.
Located just south
and west of Dupont Circle, north of Foggy Bottom and east of Georgetown,
the West End is convenient to just about everything it seems. The K
Street Corridor, the Georgetown Waterfront, a dozen hotels, restaurants
and shops are all mere steps away. Also
nearby are Rock Creek Parkway and the Whitehurst Freeway (which provide
easy access to the outer-lying suburbs of both Virginia and Maryland).
Within easy walking distance to the Red Line Metro in Dupont Circle as
well as the Orange & Blue Lines in Foggy Bottom, the West End offers
close proximity to all the city's amenities. Even the Kennedy Center is
only a short stroll away.
Generally speaking, the West End is considered the area
south of P Street, North of K Street, West of 21st Street and
East of 26th Street.
